WSOP: Full Beginner’s Guide to Getting Started on the WSOP App
The World Series of Poker (WSOP) is the most famous poker circuit across the globe.
It originated as a single Las Vegas cash tournament in 1970 and evolved into worldwide bracelet events, with record-setting 118 events in 2022.
Apart from being a series with pro tournaments, the WSOP also has something for recreational players and those who just wish to partake in real-money cash games and smaller online tournaments.
Whether you want to become part of the WSOP online circuit or have fun playing online poker with your friends, you’ll need to familiarize yourself with the WSOP app. One thing to keep in mind is that the WSOP has different apps for real money and free play.
We will tell you everything a beginner needs to know using the app, from system requirements to how to add friends and tip the dealer.
Getting Started With the WSOP App
First, you must decide which device you want to use for playing poker via the WSOP app. For Mac OS and Windows, you’ll be downloading the software directly from the WSOP website. If you plan on using your mobile device, there are three separate apps, one each for iPhone, iPad, and Android.
Before you continue, note that playing on the WSOP for real money is only legal in four US states — Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Meanwhile, the WSOP’s free-to-play app is available nationwide.

In order to get the mobile poker app, simply go to the app store of your device, tap the download button and wait for the app to install. Make sure you don’t mix up the free and real-money WSOP poker apps when downloading. For the desktop poker client, you must go to WSOP.com and find the download page. From there, set up the client on your computer. After you complete the installation process on your respective devices, you need to register and complete a deposit, after which you can start playing real-money poker. If you opt for the free WSOP app, you’ll get free chips as a new customer and earn more as you play through various promotions.
WSOP App Welcome Bonus
The welcome bonus you receive depends on whether you’re playing for free or real money. Newly created real-money accounts will get $50 in free play, $25 available after signing up, and the other $25 after completing the first deposit.
There’s also a match deposit bonus of 100% up to $1000. Meanwhile, becoming a new player on the free-to-play app comes with one million free chips.
Commonly Asked Questions
How to Add a Friend on the WSOP
If you want to add friends on the WSOP app, go to inventory in the top left corner and find the Friends button. Find your poker pal by typing their name in the search box and clicking Add Friend.
You can do the same by going to the Preferences section on your account page, entering the player’s name under Friend Requests, and clicking Submit Request. There’s also a way to add friends by connecting the app to your Facebook account.
What Does Tipping the Dealer Do in the WSOP App?
Once you start playing the games on the WSOP app, you’ll notice the option to tip the dealer. This is basically the WSOP’s way of honoring the tradition of tipping, which is a common practice in land-based casinos. Whenever you win a big prize, it’s customary to give a few chips to the dealer.
Yet, since there are no actual people dealing cards on the WSOP app, why would there even be a tipping option? In essence, it’s how the WSOP app makes more money. You effectively do nothing when you tip, as the money disappears from your balance and goes to the house.
Despite some beliefs and superstitions, tipping the dealer does not result in drawing better cards.
Is the WSOP App Rigged?
Both free and real-money WSOP apps are completely legitimate. The money you deposit to your real-cash account will be safe at all times, and you can also trust the transaction process when withdrawing your winnings.
The cards are dealt with a random number generator (RNG). Just like when playing at a legitimate land-based casino, everyone is treated equally, and no games are rigged.
How to Get More Free Chips on the WSOP App
Free chips are your currency when playing on the free WSOP app. Apart from getting one million free chips as a new player, you will unlock more free chips every three hours.
There are even more ways to earn additional chips, such as inviting friends to use the app, supporting the WSOP on social media, using special bonus codes, receiving free chips as gifts from other players, and more.
Is It Better to Play Poker for Free or Real Money?
Now that you know the WSOP has both free and real-money poker apps, you should decide which to use, or you can do both (as long as the real-money WSOP app is available in your state).
However, if you’re a true beginner, we advise you to start with free poker and get the feel of competing against other players online. Get used to playing on mobile and desktop, test different strategies, establish a solid bankroll, and then you can switch to the real-money game.
How Can I Deposit and Withdraw Money on the Real Money WSOP App?
Depositing and cashing out your winnings from the WSOP app is straightforward and secure. First, you must set up a WSOP real-money account and visit the Cashier section. Then, you will be offered several payment gateways, which are the same for Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. Once you choose the preferred method, enter the amount and your account details, and press Deposit/Withdraw.
All four states support PayPal, credit/debit cards (Visa, Maestro, Mastercard), e-Check ACH, Cash at Casino Cage, PayNearMe, and Pay+.
Note that the cards and PayNearMe are only available for deposits. Furthermore, the WSOP app doesn’t charge additional fees to fund your account.
Can I Bluff Using the WSOP App?
You can. Compared to the WSOP played at land-based casinos, where players must learn how to control their body language and facial expressions, playing online or via the WSOP app is more manageable as other players only get to see your avatar. Thus, even if you bluff, no one will be able to tell.
