James Bond (Daniel Craig) in Casino Royale playing poker against Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen)Summary:

  • Mads Mikkelsen made the revelation in an interview with British men’s magazine GQ
  • The Danish actor said Craig actually “sucked at poker” and had no idea about the game
  • In Casino Royale, Craig’s character Bond defeated Mikkelsen’s character Le Chiffre in a high-stakes poker game

Daniel Craig first appeared as James Bond in the 2006 spy film Casino Royale.

His character as 007 agent Bond was tasked to bankrupt an Albanian private banker and terrorist financier named Le Chiffre, who was the primary antagonist in the film, portrayed by Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen. The movie hits its climax in a high-stakes poker tournament at Casino Royale in Montenegro where Bond came face to face with Le Chiffre and ended up winning the game.

In Casino Royale, Bond was considered MI6’s best poker player, but is the actor who portrayed him really good at poker? Well, Mikkelsen just revealed a fresh trivia: Craig actually sucked at the game.

Mads Mikkelsen Reveals Craig Was Not Very Good Playing Poker

Mikkelsen was recently featured in a video by British men’s magazine GQ where he breaks down his most iconic characters, and topping the list was his role as the antagonist Le Chiffre in Casino Royale. The Danish actor talked about one of the most iconic scenes in the movie – a $10 million buy-in poker tournament involving him and Craig who played Bond.

Mikkelsen is poker savvy in real life, which means he really knows how to play the game. He began playing the game as a kid, so he isn’t a stranger to it. But Craig is the direct opposite. The Danish actor funnily shared that his co-star doesn’t know how to play poker, and it’s the “worst thing ever” that his character demanded him to beat Le Chiffre and take all his money. According to Mikkelsen, Craig “had no clue” how to do it, especially as the poker hands involved were insane.

Daniel Craig Won’t Mind The Criticism

The James Bond fictional character has generally been portrayed to be great at the poker table in most movies that involve a casino scene which has always given the game a sense of allure for newbies. While Craig is painted as being a poor poker player in real life, he ended up doing a pretty good job as James Bond in Casino Royale.

Casino Royale was directed by Martin Campbell and also starred Judi Dench, Caterina Murino, Jeffrey Wright, and Eva Green.
