Read on and learn about the biggest poker tournaments in the Granite State
New Hampshire was the first US state to introduce a lottery by passing the Sweepstakes bill in 1963. It is home to multiple charity casinos, bingo halls, and pari-mutuel betting venues. Unfortunately, online gambling still hasn’t gained legal status in NH.
Even so, NH citizens can still grab a virtual seat at dozens of offshore online casinos. Offshore platforms are neither explicitly prohibited nor explicitly permitted.
In this article, we will explain the history of gambling and poker in New Hampshire and give you a list of online and land-based poker rooms where you can test your skill.
New Hampshire doesn’t allow tribal gaming or commercial land-based casinos. Still, many game rooms offer games of chance run by nonprofit organizations (charitable gambling). The Racing and Charitable Gaming Division of the NH Lottery Commission regulates these activities.
You can find the definition of gambling in Section 647:2 of Revised Statutes. It states that “gambling means to risk something of value upon a future contingent event not under one’s control or influence, upon an agreement or understanding that something of value will be received in the event of a certain outcome.”
This means that all games of chance that are not organized by the NH lottery or a licensed charity are illegal. While most gambling-related crimes are considered misdemeanors, operating a big gambling establishment is a class B felony, and owners “shall be fined not less than $5,000 per day for each gambling machine used or intended for use“.
Legal gambling in NH started with horse race betting in 1933, followed by the lottery in 1963, and greyhound race wagering in 1971. Greyhound race betting was outlawed in 2010, to the dismay of many fans. But, the dreams of many sports betting enthusiasts came true when online sports wagering was legalized in 2019, albeit only on DraftKings. Aside from these options, daily fantasy sports, lottery, pari-mutuel wagering, and keno are also allowed online.
Charitable games of chance were made legal in 1977, with a maximum bet of $1. In later years, max wagers were upped to $2, then $4, and in 2015, HB 169 — the only bill concerning poker — allowed the increase of maximum bets to $250. However, it only pertains to land-based poker. When it comes to online casinos and poker rooms, the senate is pushing toward legalization, but whether the bill will pass remains to be seen.
Until Granite State legalizes online poker, players can only enjoy this activity in offshore poker rooms. While NH authorities generally frown upon those sites, they aren’t outright banned, so players should not fear legal repercussions. Even if it were to take legal action, the New Hampshire state government is more likely to prosecute the operators than the players.
But this doesn’t mean that all offshore sites are safe to play at. Players should be extra cautious when playing on these platforms and check licenses, regulations, and terms and conditions.
Citizens of the Granite State are devoid of state-regulated online poker rooms.
However, there are offshore sites that welcome players from NH. Even though these online poker platforms aren’t NH-regulated, they are subject to other licenses and regulations, so you can go all in without worrying about safety.
Players from NH have a range of poker tournament options at land-based gaming establishments.
With 13 poker rooms scattered throughout the state, you can undoubtedly find one that suits your playing style and preferences.

We suggest avoiding American banks since they may not process payments to offshore sites. Instead of credit/debit cards, consider PayPal, cryptocurrency, or e-wallets. Choosing the most convenient payment method, with minimal fees and maximum transaction speed, is essential
Offshore platforms offer various bonuses to attract new players and retain current ones. But before you say yes to anything, check the website’s terms and conditions to ensure the offer is worthwhile.
Online poker tournaments come with variable buy-in prices, so look through the options to find the best choice for your budget and skill level.
