Kansas is primarily known thanks to the famous Wizard of Oz movie, and people rarely associate it with poker. All forms of gambling, barring a few licensed exceptions, are illegal in Kansas, and this naturally includes poker.

Section 21-4303 of the Kansas Code deems any bet or commercial gambling illegal. The only exceptions are a few tribal land-based casinos.

Thanks to a few land-based poker rooms and casinos, cash poker games and tournaments are available in Sunflower State. However, online poker is illegal, and you’ll only find it in offshore online poker rooms.

Poker Tournaments in Kansas

Even though poker isn’t regulated in the state, tribal casinos are allowed, with some offering poker. Only one, Hollywood Casino Kansas Speedway, regularly organizes poker tournaments, while there are only two other poker rooms in the state.

Despite not having an actual poker tournament scene, poker pros from Kansas still participate in various tournaments throughout the country.

At the top of the Kansas all-time money list is undoubtedly Brandon Steven, whose all-time live earnings surpass $6 million. He is at the top of his game now, having earned almost half of his career prize money in 2022 alone, even though he’s been active since 2006.

Moreover, all the $2,820,581 he made last year came from a single event — the 53rd WSOP $250,000 No Limit Hold’em Super High Roller event in Las Vegas. Steven came in second, while William Foxen won.

Besides Brandon Steven, a few other players are worth mentioning:

  • Kirk Morrison — $3.17 million
  • Maxx Coleman — $2.70 million
  • Brett Shaffer — $2.49 million
  • Ray Dehkharghani — $1.84 million
  • Grant Hinkle — $1.68 million
  • Jason Brin — $1.02 million

Online Poker Tournaments in Kansas

Since all forms of poker are illegal in Kansas, you won’t find any online tournaments in the state. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t tourneys in licensed offshore online poker rooms.

Kansas gambling laws are outdated, leaving online poker in a legal gray area. As with many other states, Kansas statutes define what gambling is and that it’s illegal. Still, as the law is outdated, it’s hard to say whether that includes playing poker for real money on your computer or mobile phone via an international poker site.

Section 21-4303 of the Kansas statutes states that illegal gambling is “making a bet, or entering or remaining in a gambling place with the intent to place a bet, to play a lottery, or to play a gambling device.” This makes it unclear whether the law applies to offshore sites.

The good news is that the state doesn’t prosecute online poker players, either. No online poker player has yet been charged for using an offshore poker website.

With that in mind, if you’re interested in participating in online poker tournaments, you can use any of the international offshore sites we recommend on this page. They all welcome players from Kansas and offer various events with prize pools that sometimes surpass a million dollars.

Land-Based Poker Tournaments in Kansas

As the state finds poker illegal, you won’t find tournaments in places other than tribal casinos. However, even though there are several land-based casinos in Kansas, with only three having dedicated poker rooms, only one location organizes regular poker tournaments — Hollywood Casino Kansas Speedway.

The other two poker rooms that offer cash games like No Limit and Limit Hold’em and Pot Limit Omaha are Harrah’s Kansas City and Boot Hill Casino.

You can always go out of state if you want to play in other tourneys, just like the pro players we’ve mentioned. Neighboring Missouri, Colorado, and Oklahoma have several poker establishments that organize daily tourneys.

How to Register for an Online Poker Tournament

If you want to play in an online poker tournament from Kansas, you’ll have to visit and create an account at one of the licensed and reputable offshore poker sites. Thankfully, the process is simple and essentially the same across the board. Here’s the step-by-step guide on what you’ll need to do in the online poker rooms we recommend:

Pick an online poker room

We’ve done the legwork and analyzed many offshore sites that accept players from Kansas. We’ve ended up separating the few that are, by far, the best in the state. The only thing you need to do is take a look at our list and pick one site that fits your needs the most.

Signup

Use our link to visit the official site and start the registration procedure by clicking the Join/Register/Sign Up button. You’ll need to input personal information like your full name, address, and email. The process is similar to what you get on most other sites, so you only need to follow the steps to the end.

Deposit & Play

Once your account is ready, you can make your initial deposit. Visit the Cashier section and choose the deposit method you want to use. Even though credit cards are usually available, American banks sometimes deny payments to offshore gambling sites. It’s best to use an alternative like an e-wallet or cryptocurrency. Once you’ve chosen the option, you must input the details and the amount you want to transfer. The money should reach your account immediately.

This step is optional “Claim the welcome offer” but advisable as you’ll likely get a good amount of extra money to play with. Check the bonus terms to determine if the bonus is good for you. Claim it once you’re sure it’s worthwhile.

Visit the poker tournament section and scroll through the offerings. Pick a contest you like and sign up. As a newly-registered player, you’ll likely get the option to join some free rolls or other events for new members.

Kansas Land-Based Casinos With Poker Tournaments

As you’ve already learned, only one land-based casino in the state offers regular poker tournaments — Hollywood Casino Kansas Speedway.

The casino is found in Kansas City and features 12 poker tables, with the minimum gambling age being 21.

Most events are No Limit Hold’em, and buy-ins are usually $100 or $150. Players can participate in at least one tourney almost every day of the week.
