Poker Tournaments in Connecticut
Connecticut gambling dates back two centuries ago, and it all started with harness racing in 1876. Fast forward to the 21st century, the Constitution State evolved gambling-wise, and many gambling forms have been regulated along the way. Currently, the Connecticuters can legally enjoy the following:
- Charitable gaming (bingo and ruffles)
- State Lottery
- Jai Alai (although it ceased to exist)
- Horse and greyhound racing
- Tribal casino gambling
- Online gambling
- Sports betting (on-site and online)
Since both land-based and online poker is regulated, there should be no shortage of poker opportunities in the state. But is it all black and white? The following paragraphs will explore CT gambling regulations and brick-and-mortar and online poker tournaments you can find in the state.
Online Poker Tournaments in Connecticut
After lobbying for many years and several proposed bills, Connecticut finally legalized online gambling in 2021. Governor Ned Lamont signed HB 6451 on May 27 of the same year, making CT the seventh US state to regulate online poker.
However, before this law came into effect, the state had to reach an agreement with the two local Indian tribes — Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan. They have a duopoly on gambling and operate the only two land-based casinos in the country. The agreement granted them exclusive rights over online gambling, meaning each tribe can launch one online gambling site, provided that online poker and casino games are hosted on the same platform.
However, while sports betting took off well, online poker has yet to get going. The first sports wagering sites and online casinos went live in October 2021, and three gaming operators launched their websites. The main reason poker is still waiting at the door is CT’s small population of only a little over 3.5 million, as it’s not particularly interesting to providers.
One thing that could solve this major issue is if CT signs the Multi-State Internet Gambling Agreement (MSIGA). Shared liquidity would extend the player pool and attract current stakeholders. If this happens, experts speculate FunDuel has a realistic chance to be the first to set up an online poker site in CT due to being owned by the parent company of PokerStars — Flutter. For this reason, CT poker players will have to wait a few more months or years until interstate online poker tournaments become a reality.
Nevertheless, players can hone their skills at sweepstakes sites and numerous international online gambling platforms. The former is legal and organizes poker events and tournaments but uses a unique currency — sweeps and gold coins.
The latter fall in the gray area since they operate from foreign jurisdictions, and no law explicitly prohibits players from visiting them. However, they are licensed by internationally recognized regulatory bodies and accept players from Connecticut. Furthermore, they host frequent poker tournaments. We have compiled a list of the best among them, so make sure to scroll up and browse it.
Land-Based Poker Tournaments in Connecticut
The Constitution State may not have as rich live casino offerings as some other states, but it is home to two tribal casinos with huge poker rooms — Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Casino. The former is owned and operated by the Mohegan Tribe, while the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation runs the latter.
It all started when the non-profits were granted permission to host Vegas Nights in 1972. This way, charities could offer casino-style gaming while keeping the profits. These actions were the first steps toward legalizing the two above-mentioned tribal casinos. Foxwoods first opened its doors as a commercial bingo hall in 1986.
Then, thanks to the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988, the group decided they could also offer casino games. This act gave the tribes exclusive rights to build and operate gaming establishments on their reservations. Foxwoods finally reached an agreement with governor Lowell P. Weicker Jr. in 1993, and Mohegan Sun followed suit in 1996.
Although Connecticut has only these two casinos, both offer incredible poker experiences. They also feature all Vegas-style casino games, from blackjack and roulette to thousands of slot machines. Foxwoods’s poker room is vast and boasts almost 150 tables. The one at Mohegan Sun Casino is smaller, with 42 tables and an excellent reputation.
Both are open 24/7, feature a gamut of poker titles, and organize daily tournaments (up to four or five on weekends). They are also resort-style establishments offering accommodation, fine dining, and entertainment.
