The Global Poker League (GPL) will now have PokerStars as their lead sponsor.
Mediarex Sports and Entertainment, the parent company for the GPL confirmed the same during a press release on Sept. 30.
PokerStars the biggest online poker website in the world also confirmed the same and stated that it will be acting as the exclusive poker sponsor of the league and will seek to transform the GPL experience from a player focused one to a fan experience.
Eric Hollreiser, PokerStars’ director of corporate communications said that the GPL brings an innovative twist to the game of poker and looked forward to supporting Mediarex in introducing poker to new global audiences.
In a statement, Alex Dreyfus, chief executive officer of the GPL said
We are optimistic about this partnership, having the support of PokerStars is a crucial step forward on the road to fully establishing the GPL as a real blueprint for poker entertainment in the future. PokerStars offers us a multitude of opportunities to grow our platform and continue developing our twofold strategy of connecting the league to the poker community and genuinely connecting poker to the mainstream entertainment sector on a large scale.

Under the terms of the deal, PokerStars logo of the red spade will be shown prominently inside The Cube, which is GPL’s moveable playing arena. Some of the top members of Team PokerStars Pros will also participate in the GPL – these will include Vanessa Selbst, Liv Boeree, Jason Mercier and Bertrand ElkY Grospellier.
The GPL is all set to start broadcasting on PokerStars TV from Oct. 4. The channel will live stream the games every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Insights from recent surveys conducted by the GPL reveal that 56 percent of poker fans would like to participate in team tournaments while 41 percent would like to become a part of a GPL team. The GPL has 12 teams each with 6 professional poker players, totally to 72 pros whose aggregated live tournament winnings exceed $400 million. The second part of the GPL kicked off recently on Sept 20 and playoffs are planned in Las Vegas in the end of November.
The brand-new format created a lot of interest prior to its launch but has since struggled to find success, with several rumours of cash-flow difficulties. Mediarex’s deal with the online poker giant could help with the cash crunch and provide a much-needed boost in terms of both operational funding and visibility.
