World Poker Tour (WPT)For the first time ever, the World Poker Tour National (WPTN) will be held in Portugal from May 8-15. The poker festival will be hosted by Solverde Casino Espinho and the highlight of the tournament will be the €750 WPT National Iberia Main Event.

In a departure from the norm, Spain will also act as a host for the poker festival as a result of a partnership with the Multi-Venue Series (MVS). Spain will be responsible for holding two opening days at Gran Casino Madrid and Casino Barcelona and will host other events as well.

This unique arrangement has enabled the organizers to offer a whopping €333,333 as guaranteed prize pool for the tournament.

Satellites for WPTN’s main event will be held at all locations with May 12 and 13 being the two opening days. This will be a deep-stacked event and players will start with 30,000 in opening chips and blind levels for 40 minutes. According to the rules, players will continue playing until only seven percent of the field is left. Those who make the final cut will need to play out the last leg in Gran Casino Madrid which takes place from May 22-23.

Four satellites are planned for the Main Event at Casino Espinho with buy-ins as low as €110, a fraction of the regular €750 buy-in. Players in these satellite events will start with 5,000 opening chips and 20 minute blind levels. They will be allowed to re-buy for free for the first three blind levels while also receiving 10,000 chips.

Apart from these, Casino Espinho will also host a number of exclusive tournaments. A three-day high roller event, €1,500 Welcome WPT High Roller will be held between May 10 and 12. The tournament will feature only 40 players who will be given 50,000 opening chips and 40 minute blind levels along with one re-entry.

The other two events are the €160 WPT Wanted Bounty and the €80 WPT Last Chance to Win which allow players on a tight budget the opportunity to play in the tournament.

The decision to hold the event across three locations was made for the players’ convenience, with MVS’ Neil Barrett saying that the locations were carefully chosen to ensure that as many players as possible could take part during the early stages of the tournament and did not have to travel too much. Although a little difficult to manage operationally, Barrett said that the technical and operational expertise of the partners made it possible.

Solverde Casino Espinho is located near the city of Porto, the second largest city in Portugal after Lisbon while the other two casinos in Spain are located in capital city of Madrid and Barcelona.
