Wrestling superstar <strong>John \u201c<em>Bradshaw<\/em>\u201d Layfield<\/strong>, known as \u201c<em>JBL<\/em>\u201d, hosted an invitational poker tournament on <strong>Monday Night Raw<\/strong> on December 5, 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The first of a series of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.top10pokersites.net\/top-10-poker-games\">poker games<\/a> that both wrestling and poker fans can look forward to in future episodes of the popular wrestling show. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"jbls-relationship-with-poker\">JBL\u2019s Relationship with Poker<\/h2>\n<p>JBL retired from professional wrestling in 2009 but remains connected to the sport, making multiple appearances at various wrestling shows. At the moment, he manages the wrestling career of former professional footballer <strong>Baron Corbin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>JBL\u2019s rise to prominence began during the WWE\u2019s Attitude Era where he won as Tag Team Champion three times along with his partner <strong>Ron \u201c<em>Faarooq<\/em>\u201d Simmons<\/strong>. Poker had been an integral part of their acts, with the duo, known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/prowrestling.fandom.com\/wiki\/Acolytes_Protection_Agency\">Acolytes Protection Agency<\/a> (APA), often seen playing poker in the backrooms of arenas, eventually gaining a huge fan base. <\/p>\n<div style=\"position:relative;height:0;padding-bottom:56.25%\">\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8l9svwfW3ps?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0?ecver=2\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"position:absolute;width:100%;height:100%;left:0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Now, JBL hopes to recreate those moments as poker makes a return to WWE Raw.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-poker-wrestling-connection\">The Poker-Wrestling Connection <\/h2>\n<p>WWE has a long-standing love affair with poker, using it as a gimmick several times in the past. Back in 2018, when the show marked its 25th year, it aired a special poker game that featured no other than the APA team.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2006<\/strong> also banked on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.top10pokersites.net\/blog\/rise-of-texas-holdem\">the popularity of Texas Hold\u2019em<\/a>, as it was among the mini-games featured in the video game, allowing users to play against 50 different wrestlers. <\/p>\n<p>In October 2021, the WWE took another shot at using poker to boost fan engagement. This time around, it was Australian professional wrestler <strong>Duke Hudson<\/strong> who would become the lead star. \u201c<em>Duke\u2019s Poker Room<\/em>\u201d became part of WWE NXT but was short-lived after failing to gain traction.<\/p>\n<p>In the poker world, plenty of poker pros are wrestling fans as well. Take for example <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.top10pokersites.net\/news\/daniel-cates-comes-under-fire-over-controversial-lip-filler-tweet\">Dan \u201c<em>Jungleman<\/em>\u201d Cates<\/a><\/strong> who impersonated American wrestling legend <strong>Randy \u201c<em>Macho Man<\/em>\u201d Savage<\/strong> during the recent World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas. He ended up winning the <em>$50K Poker Players Championship<\/em>, becoming the first player in WSOP history to win the tournament in two straight years. <\/p>\n<p>Cates is a fan of wrestling but never tried it his entire life. <strong>Dash Dudley<\/strong> did. Prior to becoming a poker pro, Dudley was a wrestler in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.top10pokersites.net\/top-10-us-poker-sites\/michigan\">Michigan<\/a>.
