""The World Series of Poker (WSOP) announced earlier this week via Twitter that Chris Ferguson is in the lead position to win the 2017 World Series of Poker Player of the Year after the elimination of John Racener from the final event of the year that had POY points attached to it.

As a result of his POY win, Chris Ferguson will gain entry into the WSOP Main Event in 2018 which has a $10,000 buy-in. He will also feature on a banner along with former WSOP players of the year and Main Event winners which will be displayed at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino.

Ferguson will be joining an exclusive group of POY winners. If we look at the last three years, George Danzer who has 5 WSOP table appearances and 3 WSOP bracelets won the POY award in 2014, Mike Gorodinsky who has 3 WSOP table appearances and 1 WSOP bracelet won the POY award in 2015 and Jason Mercier who has 4 WSOP table appearances and 2 WSOP bracelets won the POY award in 2016.
