PTUnibet Poker Secures 3 Year Deal To Host Swedish Poker Championships
After successfully hosting the Swedish Poker Championships Online (Poker-SM Online) in 2020, Unibet Poker will remain as the headline sponsor of the event for the next three years, as part of an extended deal with the Swedish Poker Association.
The Swedish Poker Championships (Poker-SM) is among the longest-running national championships in Sweden. It was launched in 1974 and has since taken place mainly as a live event, until last year when the coronavirus pandemic forced the cancellation of several major events worldwide. The festival was moved online and ran on Unibet Poker.
But that wasn’t the first time that the event was held virtually. Back in 2006, a portion of the Swedish Poker Championships also took place online in partnership with 888poker. In 2020, the association chose Unibet Poker as the festival’s exclusive host on a trial basis. It was a huge success, and now the partnership has been extended.
Under the deal, Unibet Poker will serve as main organizer for the festival, and will have a say on the type of format, as well as the potential changes that the event must adopt over the next three years, starting this March through to 2023.
The Swedish Poker Championships will get underway this month, and Unibet Poker will host plenty of satellites to accommodate as many players as possible.
The news has been welcomed by Swedish poker pros, including Robert Svedin who said that it felt “completely right” that Unibet Poker will host events in Sweden, given its strong background and proven track record. Unibet’s tournament manager Leo Wagenius is equally happy about the extended deal as it will allow them to develop a long-term strategy that will enable them to attract more players.
Unibet Poker Continues To Expand
Unibet Poker has some Swedish ties. The online platform is owned by the Kindred Group, and its founder Anders Ström hails from Sweden. Moreover, the company is also listed on the Swedish Stock Exchange and has offices in the country. Back in 2019, its office at Urban Escape in central Stockholm was named Sweden’s Best Looking Office, as part of an annual competition organized by Fastighetssverige and Lokalnytt.se.
Unibet Poker has been operating in Sweden for two years now, and its new partnership with the Swedish Poker Association will help it gain a strong foothold in the country which is home to an active and busy poker market. The online poker room has continued to grow as a standalone platform, since departing from Microgaming in 2014. Boosting its presence in Sweden will add to Unibet Poker’s growth in the international market.
