PTPPA Pushes For Online Poker Legislation In New York
Poker Players Alliance (PPA) has continued its campaign for the legalization of online poker and is now pushing for New York to lift the ban on online gambling. The PPA has campaigned aggressively for a number of years and was happy to see Pennsylvania legalize online gambling in October 2018.
New York is now seen by many as the next state to move forward with their iGaming legislation. Currently only Delaware, Nevada, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania have legalized online gambling. New York is one of the larger and wealthier states in the U.S and has taken steps towards pushing for online gambling legislation in the last 24 months.
In June 2016, the New York State Senate was able to pass State Sen. John Bonacic’s S5302 measure, which is one of the online poker bill in the state’s legislative branch. Senators voted a resounding 53-5 in favor of the bill, which makes it ready for consolidation with the Assembly’s version of the bill.
While the online poker bill went through smoothly in the Senate, it met with a lot of opposition from the other half of the chamber.
According to Assemblyman Gary Pretlow, the second online poker bill A05250 was stalled in the Codes committee. The process to gain approval is a slow one as the bill would have to also go through the Ways, Means, and Rules committees before a final vote. Pretlow estimates that poker enthusiasts who are waiting for New York to make a decision on online poker legislation will have to be patient and wait for the next update in 2018.
The PPA continues to play a huge role in the passage of the online poker bill in New York. PPA Vice President Rich Muny published an opinion-editorial piece at the organization’s official website to call New York citizens who are in favor of the bill to personally contact their lawmakers to pass the bill.
The Poker Daily Action Plan is social media campaign by the PPA that calls Empire State residents to contact two state lawmakers to let them know about their stand on the online poker issue. PPA believes that if lawmakers hear the plea of the citizens, they will work harder to get the bill traction in both chambers.
