Phil Ivey Launches Legal Action

Last Updated on May 9, 2013 Author:Adrian Sterne

Phil IveyYou may remember a unusual story in October last year when one of one of the world’s 10 most popular Poker players, and how one of the world’s best known and most exclusive of land based casinos refused to pay him his winnings of a staggering £7.3 million, in fact some report this figure as being a much higher £7.8 million which he accumulated during a lucky streak at the latter part of last year when playing Punto Banco.

Well it looks like the casino in question, Crockfords of Mayfair are still flatly refusing to pay him his winnings and he has just announced that his patience has worn thin and it is now time to take legal action against them in an attempt to get them to pay him his winnings. Taking a casino to court is a very unusual event and as such it is probably a case of them refusing point blank to honour his winnings and them deciding it is best to leave it in the hands of a judge to sort out.

Crockfords returned his £1 million stake money and that is all they are prepared to pay to him, simply citing discrepancies as the reason why they are not paying, and have left it in the hands of their lawyers, and it would now seem a court and judge to decide whether he should be paid or not!

Crockfords are owned by the highly respected Genting Group and as such it more than likely isn’t a case of them not being able to pay him those winnings, but more likely it being a case of him doing something wrong whilst playing, what he did or didn’t do we will only know when the matter gets to court, however one thing is guaranteed and that is due to the massive amount of cash at stake, both parties will be battling to get this matter sorted out, one way or the other.

It is the UK Gambling Commission who regulates and license all land based casinos in the UK and as such it is going to be expected they will have a role to play during this up and coming court case. We will of course keep you fully updated with all of the events that unfold should of course the matter not get settled out of court, which many commentators think will be the outcome!
