Summary
- Phil Hellmuth and Tom Dwan are battling it out for a second time on High Stakes Duel
- The highly anticipated rematch is too close to call given both players’ skills and capabilities
- A major blow-up from Hellmuth could be on the cards
The much-awaited rematch between Phil Hellmuth and Tom Dwan on High Stakes started on January 26. The Poker Brat is looking to redeem himself after Dwan gave him his first-ever loss on the show.
High Stakes Duel III will see The Poker Brat adding $200,000 as buy-in, bringing the total prize pool to $400,000.
Hellmuth Will Stick to Tight-Aggressive Play
The first match took place back in August with Dwan adopting a more patient, systematic strategy to knock out Hellmuth. There weren’t any major highlights as both players stayed passive for the most part.
Interestingly, Hellmuth didn’t channel his bratty side, in contrast to his usual behavior at the table when losing some hands. Things might change during the rematch and we are more likely to see The Poker Brat’s signature meltdowns which many find entertaining to watch.
What Hellmuth won’t change however is his traditional play style which has helped him conquer several tournaments in recent years. Before facing Dwan, he had enjoyed a 7-0 streak on the show, and he was able to do that through his tight-aggressive game.
So we can expect The Poker Brat to be extra careful with hand selection and making massive bluffs at some point in Round 3 of High Stakes Duel III. There’s a high chance that the 16-time World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet winner will initiate some wild action at the table while devouring his favorite greasy burgers.
Can Dwan Win Once Again?
Dwan made a name for himself during the poker boom era, taking down some of the biggest high-stakes games online. He has had huge success at the live felts as well, with more than $5 million in total live earnings. The poker pro is popular for his hyper-aggressive play style, but we haven’t seen him use that strategy more often in his recent games.
Dwan has a lot of patience now, though he is still capable of pulling off those huge bluffs. But who knows, he might showcase his old self during his rematch with Hellmuth. It will be an exciting neck and neck battle between these two poker greats! We will keep you updated on how all of the action plays out.
