Tom Dwan and Phil HellmuthSummary

  • Tom Dwan has backed out of the match with Hellmuth due to scheduling conflicts
  • The match has been moved to May 17
  • Phil Ivey, Doyle Brunson, and Doug Polk are possible replacements for Dwan

Tom Dwan has cancelled his participation in the upcoming High Stakes Duel III Round 4 match against Phil Hellmuth.

Both players were supposed to face each other again for a third time today, May 12 but that will not now happen as Dwan is currently out of the country and won’t be able to make it to Las Vegas in time for the highly-anticipated battle.

Match Rescheduled

While Dwan has now officially abandoned the match, Hellmuth couldn’t walk away with his money just yet. As per the show’s rules, the current series needs to continue and Dwan’s decision to back out has left the door open for another player to take on Hellmuth. That new opponent will have to shell out $400,000 to serve as Dwan’s replacement in High Stakes Duel III Round 4.

Instead of the original May 12 schedule, the match will happen five days later on May 17 and the full action will be streamed as usual on PokerGO. Hellmuth’s new opponent is expected to be revealed soon and members of the poker community now have their respective guesses.

Who Will Replace Dwan?

It will be interesting to see Hellmuth battle it out with another top pro from his era. By this, we mean players who made a name for themselves during the good ol’ days and have continued to crush the tables up to now. Potential candidates include Doyle Brunson and Phil Ivey.

And who wouldn’t want another match between Hellmuth and Daniel Negreanu? Both have been involved in a fresh social media feud that ended up with The Poker Brat blocking the GGPoker ambassador on Twitter.

Other possible opponents include Shaun Deeb, Dan “Jungleman” Cates and Doug Polk, each of whom has clashed with Hellmuth at some point either at the poker tables or on social media.

Of course, PokerGO can pick someone not directly involved in the world of poker but are extremely popular in the things that they do, such as professional gamer and Twitch streamer Tyler “Ninja” Blevins, and entrepreneur, philanthropist, and YouTube personality Jimmy Donaldson, better known as “MrBeast“.

Hellmuth triumphed in eight out of his nine matches on High Stakes Duel. He won all three against Antonio Esfandiari and pulled off a similar victory against Negreanu. The first round of High Stakes Duel III saw him defeating Nick Wright, but his winning streak was put to an end by Dwan who won Round 2 of the current series.
