On April 14, 2023, poker fans around the world finally get to watch a new documentary that explores the modern world of professional poker.

Dreamers: A New-Age Poker Documentary” features interviews with some of the best players in the game, big names in poker content creation, as well as popular industry figures, providing a revealing insight into the experiences of those who are passionate about the game.

Dreamers Follows Players at the WPT World Championship

The documentary follows Chris Moneymaker, Darren Elias, Matt Berkey, Landon Tice, Jaman Burton, Ethan “Rampage” Yau, Jeff Platt, Maria Konnikova, and Jamie Kerstetter, as they took part in some of the key events at the first-ever World Poker Tour (WPT) World Championship at Wynn Las Vegas in December 2022.

The documentary film captures what poker players go through when they compete in major tournaments – the ups and downs of playing in high-stakes events and the rollercoaster of emotions that comes along with it. The film asserts the importance of possessing mental toughness when embarking on a poker career given the high level of competition and the downswings associated with the game.

Dreamers Director Shares How the Documentary Came About

Dreamers is the brainchild of Tom Wheaton, the founder of the poker marketing and talent agency Above the Felt. Wheaton, who produced and directed the documentary, shared that the original plan was to produce a content project out of casual vlogs featuring some members of the Above the Felt team who were in Vegas to compete in the WPT World Championship.

But when the filming progressed, Wheaton realized they could actually create a full documentary out of the interviews and everything they had captured.

Making the project extra special was the fact that two of the members of Above the Felt finished strong in the tournaments they played in. Kerstetter took home $21,934 after finishing sixth in the $1,100 WPT Ladies Championship, while Yau emerged as the winner of the $25,000 High Roller, walking away with his biggest live cash so far worth $894,240.

When asked about their goals for Dreamers: A New-Age Poker Documentary, Wheaton said they’re not releasing it to make money or win awards. The team views the project as an investment in the poker community and the poker industry as a whole.

Wheaton hopes that by releasing Dreamers, people, especially those who are new to poker, improve their perception of the poker space and realize that it is different from the casino industry.

Dreamers premieres on YouTube on April 14 at 7 p.m. EST.
