Aussie MillionsThere will be no Aussie Millions in January 2021 as the poker festival, alongside many other poker events scheduled for next year at Crown Melbourne, have been “placed on hold” in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Crown Melbourne made the announcement on its website without giving an exact timeline for when the tournament will take place, adding that the health and safety of players and employees remain its top priority. It assured everyone that it will continue to monitor the situation and will release a new schedule, once it’s deemed safe for them to host poker events.

Back in March 2020, Crown Melbourne also pulled the plug on the 2020 Crown Poker Championship which was supposed to take place on April 15-27. The casino eventually announced an indefinite cancellation of all of its 2020 tournaments.

Previous Winners

The Aussie Millions is the biggest poker festival in the southern hemisphere. It was launched back in 1998 with a $1,000 buy-in No-Limit Main Event which attracted 74 entries. It was originally scheduled for July and was later moved to January in 2001.

Since then, the festival has continued to grow, attracting players from different parts of the world. The latest edition of the Aussie Millions Main Event pulled in 820 players, generating a massive $8,200,000 in total prize pool. It was won by Melbourne’s Vincent Wan for $1,318,000.

Apart from the Main Event, the festival also features other popular high roller tournaments, such as the $100,000 Challenge, which was won this year by Kahle Burns for $1,746,360. The other big winners from the 2020 Aussie Millions include Jorryt van Hoof ($25K buy-in PLO, $467,280), Farid Jattin ($25K Challenge, $983,646) and Michael Addamo ($50K Challenge, $1,073,790).

The popular festival previously featured a Super High Roller event, the $250,000 Challenge, which was won by some of the world’s best poker players, including Erik Seidel, Sam Trickett and Steve O’Dwyer. Poker legend Phil Ivey won the event thrice, in 2012, 2014, and 2015.

The first-ever winner of the Aussie Millions Main Event was Alex Horowitz. He took home $25,900 for that victory.

More Live Event Cancellations Expected in 2021

The global health crisis forced the postponement and cancellation of several live events across the globe in 2020, and it appears this trend will carry over to next year.

Recently, the World Poker Tour (WPT) also announced that the 2021 WPT Montreal will be held online at partypoker. The popular WPT stop has been held at the Playground Poker Club since 2012.
